Wolverines Drop Conference Road Game at Northwestern

Wolverines Drop Conference Road Game at Northwestern

The University of Michigan men's basketball team came into Evanston looking to avenge an earlier loss at Crisler Arena but fell, 67-52, at Northwestern on Tuesday (Feb. 2) inside Welsh-Ryan Arena. Junior guard Manny Harris (Detroit, Mich./Redford HS) and freshman guard Darius Morris (Los Angeles, Calif./Windward) led the Wolverines with 11 points each. Harris added five rebounds, three steals, and three assists, while Morris had two assists.

The Wolverines tied the game at 27-all with 6:40 to go in the first half on a Morris free throw before Northwestern slowly built its lead throughout the remainder of the contest. The Wolverines trailed 7-2 early after senior forward DeShawn Sims (Detroit, Mich./Pershing) had scored the game's first two points. Finally, at the 14:57 mark, Harris found sophomore guard Stu Douglass (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) at the top of the key and Douglass sunk the three-pointer to end the shooting drought. The half quickly turned into a thrilling long-range shooting exhibition as Northwestern made six of its first eight three-pointers and 7-of-12 (58.3 percent) for the half. Michigan nearly matched the Wildcats, trailing only 35-30 at halftime, making 6-of-18 three-point field goals and despite getting only four points from Sims, who had been averaging 17.6 points per game. It was a slow start for both teams in the second half. Michigan began shooting 0-for-6, until sophomore guard Zack Novak (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) made a three-pointer in transition at the 16:06 mark. After going down 41-33, Novak battled for an offensive rebound and got the layup, but Northwestern extended its lead to 51-35 while holding Michigan scoreless until Douglass returned to the game after an ankle injury to score the Wolverines' next basket with 7:00 remaining. Harris (11 points) and Sims (four points), who combine to average 53 percent of Michigan's offense, accounted for only 15 of Michigan's 52 points (28 percent) against Northwestern. Meanwhile, U-M had 18 points off the bench. The Wolverines return to Crisler Arena on Saturday (Feb. 6) when they host Wisconsin. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. our broadcast on 970 will begin at 3:30.
